Why would a carrier choose to work with a third party instead of contacting a customer directly?

Every carrier's goal is to eliminate miles where the truck is empty. Many of Robart Transportation's contract carriers run fleets of 10 - 150 trucks. These carriers typically do not have sales staff available to secure return loads that will reposition their equipment near one of their direct customers.
